"Happy Give Out Day!"
Pride Prom is an LGBTQ+ inclusive prom which provides an opportunity for gender and sexual minority youth to attend a dance without fear while dressing as they are most comfortable and attending the dance with whom they choose to. The student-selected theme, Pride Around the World, was chosen to represent the diversity of the Northern Virginia area as well as the international growth of LGBTQ+ equality while empathizing on the tragedies and senseless violence toward transgender persons around the world.
Last year, we proudly hosted 300+ youth from 31 high schools spanning across 5 counties. We aim to provide a dance which is comparable to traditional school proms with the understanding that many attendees will not feel safe or welcome to attend school dances. Our Pride Prom is unique in that it is both celebratory and educational - in addition to a dinner and dance space, we have a quieter location where students can meet LGBTQ-affirming local and national organizations who provide medical and mental health support. We also have mental health staff on location as many of our attendees suffer from debilitating anxiety/PTSD and Pride Prom is the first large social event they have attended.
NOVA Pride Prom is a non-profit event and all money must be raised through student fundraisers and ticket sales. We welcome and depend on donations to make dreams come true. The event benefits LGBTQ+ youth by providing a safe, affirming, and validating experience which helps to remind them that they are supported and valued by the Northern Virginia community at a time when many feel lost and scared. The letters we received from students after this year's event are heartwarming as they described the prom as "life-changing," "life-saving," and "the best night of their lives." What was even more surprising was the reactions from the adult volunteer chaperones and venue staff who reported never having seen so many youth enter the dance as scared strangers and leave as confident friends.
Thank you for helping us give kids the world.
